AT&T sold prepaid wireless service
over it's TDMA network. In 2004, AT&T was acquired by Cingular.
It was not certain how long TDMA service would be
supported since Cingular is based on a GSM network.
> Initially, Cingular stopped marketing the old Free2go
TDMA service, it was resold by other companies. > Next it eliminated
TDMA service in some smaller markets.
> Effective January 31, 2006, Cingular will
no longer activate new accounts for existing TDMA service resellers.
They will continue to support recharging of existing customer's TDMA service. However, it
is not certain if or when they will terminate TDMA service completely.
The following Cingular TDMA prepaid wireless resellers will not be
activating new customers on TDMA phones after January 31, 2006:
AIRVOICE WIRELESS - currently resells Verizon's CDMA service.
BEYOND WIRELESS- has announced it will be activating phones after
1/31/2006 with a new service using GSM phones.
CALLPLUS- no longer activates TDMA phones, they resell other carriers prepaid plans.
This does not effect existing TDMA accounts. Cingular will
continue to replenish prepaid accounts on the TDMA network. However, they will
not activate NEW accounts after January 31, 2006.
